Great old British TV shows – Part III

Elizabeth I - 2005 mini-series with Helen Mirren as the Queen in the later part of her reign.  Given how many great actresses have played her over the years, it speaks volumes about Mirren’s quality that this is the one that sticks in your mind.  It is just amazing that many years later she also played the current queen very convincingly.

Fawlty Towers –1975-79  it is just amazing how re-watchable this is given how few episodes were ever made - 12.  Intelligent, witty and completely chaotic.  Deserves its cult following.

Fresh Fields -1984-1986 – Julia MacKenzie is a delight as Hester.  Her stuffy accountant husband is also played to a tee.  There was a follow up series French Fields which was also fun.

House of Cards – 1990 mini-series.  Compulsive viewing when it first ran – particularly for people interested in politics.  The phrase “you might very well think that but I couldn’t possibly comment” has become part of the political lexicon as a result of this series.  Followed up by another series “To Play The King”. Good adaptations of the Michael Dobbs’ novels.

Keeping Up Appearances – 1990-1995  I didn’t watch this when it first came out but saw later re-runs and laughed like a drain.  Pokes fun at the class system.  Great ensemble cast – some of the plots a bit repetitive.
