State of the Month – Louisiana




Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest. 


Location – Louisiana has a coastline on the Gulf of Mexico.  Texas is to its west and Mississippi to the east with Arkansas to the north.


Origin of name – Named after King Louis XIV of France – the area was French governed.  It was later purchased by the US for about $15million – not a bad deal!  Lousiana became a state in 1812.


Nicknames – The Pelican State


Flag


Capital – Baton Rouge.  New Orleans is the largest city.


Flower – Magnolia

Bird – Brown Pelican

State Tree – Bald Cypress



Signature foods – Gumbo, Jambalaya, Po'boy, Beignets


Famous places to visit – Avery Island (the birthplace of Tabasco sauce), St Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Chauvin Sculpture Garden, Horace Wilkinson Bridge and the Mississippi and the French Quarter of New Orleans


Famous businesses/brands - Tabasco


Famous people from Louisiana – Louis Armstrong, Reese Witherspoon, Tim McGraw, Harry Connick Jr, Donna Douglas (Ellie May Clampett), Mahalia Jackson, Randy Jackson and Wynton Marsalis
