Is this just a food myth?

Should you wash chicken before cooking it?

Julia Child always washed her chicken before cooking.  But I don't – if it feels moist I'll pat it with a paper towel.  Luckily it seems that my approach is ok since the US Department of Agriculture has said it doesn't improve the chicken – and in fact it creates a real risk of spreading bacteria on the chicken around your sink and benchtop.

What do you do?

  1. I've also heard that you shouldn't wash chicken before cooking it but my mother and grandmother always did so I just got into the habit. We've never had an issue.

  2. NOOOOOOOO NEVER WASH CHICKEN! There is no need to do so, it does nothing to significantly reduce the bacterial loading on the chicken, what it does do is massively contaminate the kitchen. It's SUCH a bad idea. Please don't do it!

  3. I used to but I don't anymore. If your chicken is cooked properly, all bad stuff will be killed.

  4. I don't wash my chicken either anymore due to the possibility of contaminating kitchen sink with bacteria and other work surfaces.
