The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande is a must read for any professional or skilled person. Not just those in the health sector. And bloggers could also benefit from it. The subtitle of the book is "How to Get Things Right".
Don't be put off because the author's a doctor (a surgeon even) – he writes very clearly and does not use esoteric jargon. The book is compelling and a riveting read.
Highlights for me included:
The chapter on how airlines created effective and short checklists for emergency situations was fascinating.
And amazing as it seems it was proved that simply having surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses introducing themselves to each other by name before starting surgery reduced substantially overall complications in surgery – probably because people who know each other work much better as a team.
This book is a great read – just don't read it just before you have surgery or get on a flight.
