Leeds Castle is a beautiful palace
built on 2 linked islands. Its website
describes it as "the loveliest castle in the world" – not short of
confidence then.
It
is near Maidstone, Kent in the UK. It was bought by Edward I for his wife
Eleanor of Castile way back in 1278. It
was extensively refurbished by Henry VIII with rooms specially prepared for his
first wife Katherine of Aragon. You can
still see her badges on a fireplace there.
I guess it was too expensive to go around changing the mouldings and
badges each time he got a new wife! Or
maybe they just missed these ones.
It
comes complete with a maze – but that was only added in 1988!
You
do have to pay to get to see it but apparently that ticket will remain valid
for a year so you could visit many times.
