84 Charing Cross Road – a triumph by Helene Hanff

84 Charing Cross Road is not a new book. It dates back to 1970. But it is a triumph of a book which has stood the test of time very well.  It is based on a true story.  If you haven't ever read it, get it out from the library.  It is a quick and very appealing read.  I am not going to tell you much more about it – but don't be put off by the letter format!  Here it really works!

A couple of quotes from the book:

“Why is it that people who wouldn't dream of stealing anything else think it's perfectly all right to steal books?”

“It's against my principles to buy a book I haven't read, it's like buying a dress you haven't tried on.”

  3. I love this book, and its sequel - and as much as I enjoy Anne Bancroft & Anthony Hopkins, I think it's much better than the film version. I've never seen the edition you're showing, though.

I often think of her comment about weeding out books from her shelves - which I need to do more often myself.

  4. I've loved this book for years - it's one on its own isn't it, not like any other book... I can remember making a pilgrimage to the Charing Cross Rd so I could imagine the setting.

  6. Another great book written in letter format is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society! I liked it very much so I would definitely consider another written in the same fashion. I've heard of the book before but have not yet had the opportunity to read it. Now my attention is piqued!
