Solution – cantankerous
A fairly classic charades clue today. (For more on different cryptic clue types, see the sidebar under the StumbleUpon button)
Irritable = cantankerous
The rest of the clue builds to the same word like this:
About = ca (an abbreviation for the Latin word circa which means about)
Intelligence = nous (which is a British slang word for knowing what's what in the world or having common sense)
Surrounding – indicates that "nous" is around another word
Large ship = tanker
Ca + n + tanker + ous = cantankerous
I do like the fact that with cryptic crosswords, only one word ever really fits the clue.
