Cutie of a clue today.  A moose is of course an animal – we don't have any downunder.

Another word for "lows" is "moos" – you thought it was "lows" as in "highs and lows" – they are tricky types these crossword setters. 

And if you add the "close to byre" ie the closing or last letter of "byre" – e to moos you get moose.

I like the fact that the whole clue can be read as being about an animal.  Hey, it doesn't take a lot to keep me happy.
