Solution for 10 July cryptic crossword clue

To fall as rain – it’s very sudden (11)

Solution – precipitate

If something is very sudden it could be said to be "precipitate" which the dictionary also defines as "violently hurried".

And another word for rain is "precipitation" and the verb "precipitate" has scientific type meanings involving something coming down from the air such as dust etc.

So this is a word play based on the different meanings the base word has.

Have you noticed that if you repeat a word a few times, like I have here, that it somehow starts to look funny and meaningless? I wonder why that is. It is like that other mystery, when you learn a completely new word and then it seems to pop up all over the place!
